Pizza Sauce

Pizza sauce was one of those things I never bothered to make. It only costs like $1 for a jar of sauce at the store, and while it doesn’t taste awesome, it tastes ok. However, I’m always trying to reduce the amount of processed food that we eat, so I set out on a search for a recipe for pizza sauce. This recipe is absoultely fabulous, and I can truly say that I will never go back to the jarred sauce. Not only does it taste great, it is quick and easy to make. Just mince some garlic, throw in some spices and tomato sauce, bring it to a boil and you have homemade pizza sauce before you oven is even pre-heated.

Pizza Sauce
Yields: About 1 1/4 cups of sauce

Ingredients:
15 oz. can of tomato sauce
2 cloves of garlic, finely minced
1 tbsp. + 1 tsp. olive oil
1/2 tsp. dried basil
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
1/4 tsp. onion powder
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt or to taste

Directions:
In a medium saucepan, over medium heat add the oil. Then, add the garlic and cook till fragrant (about 30 seconds). Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a gently boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook for 15-18 minutes. Once finished cooking, remove from the heat and let cool.

*Freezer-Friendly Tip* – Store extra sauce in an air-tight container in the refrigerator or freezer.

Thank you! =) I love pizza sauce, but store bought, even in glass jars, has a funny taste to it. I prefer everything as homemade and unprocessed as possible, so this is wonderful! =) I am making your pull apart pizza bread today for game day, and using this sauce. Awesome blog! =)

    Hi there!
I found this recipe via your pull apart pizza bread (which im going to make in a bit for a on the go dinner in the car. Very classy!! Lol) it looks so simple but i wonder why does it need to be cooked? Is a can of tomato ketchup the same as out the bottle?

I make a very similar pizza sauce, adding a bit of tomato puree too & never cooked it. Hope this question doesn’t sound so weird? Lol I’m just wondering if the flavour improves?

You don’t neccesarily have to cook it, although I think it helps the spices blend more into the sauce. That being said, I’ve made this before in a pinch and not cooked it, and it turned out just fine. :)

I have a very dense question to ask on this very old posting!! I just want to make sure that when you say “a can on tomato sauce” are you referring to ketchup? Like a bottle of Heinz? Or more like a can of tomato puree? Sorry if I’m being stupid!
