Homemade Taco Seasoning

Growing up, my mom used seasoning packets for everything – tacos, sloppy joes, gravy, spaghetti sauce, etc. While they certainly are convenient, they are filling with ingredients that I prefer my family not eat, like MSG, tons of sodium, and artificial flavors and colors. The easiest solution was to make my own seasoning mixes! This taco mix takes less than 2 minutes to whip together, and features spices that most everyone has in their kitchen. Go ahead and double the recipe so you’ll always have taco seasoning on hand. :)

Homemade Taco Seasoning
Yields: 8 teaspoons of seasoning

1 packet of store bought seasoning = 2 1/2 tablespoons homemade

1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

In a small bowl, mix together chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt and pepper.

Store in an airtight container.

Yum, yum! I’ve been playing around with making my own lately too. I haven’t quite found the right balance of cumin and heat yet. Yours sounds great though! Doesn’t it feel good to be packet-free? Haha 😉

This looks delicious and I love anything that I can cook in a crockpot so I am definitely going to have to bookmark that chicken!
