My husband and I are at that age. You know, that age where your weekends are booked with weddings and showers, and everyone you know seems to be having a baby. Friday nights that were once spent bar hopping with friends have turned into an early dinner, only to come to an end when the baby gets fussy. Suddenly everyone seems so interested in the status of your reproductive system…constantly asking, “So…when are you having kids?!” (We got asked this question at least 7 times at a family wedding last weekend…we counted!)
Don’t get me wrong though, I am over the moon for our friends, and I adore loving on their sweet babies until we have our own. My best friend had the most precious baby girl last week, and I can’t get enough of her. I went to visit her the other day, and of course couldn’t resist bringing them a good meal.
For our friends, I made my favorite BBQ pulled chicken, homemade mac-n-cheese, and included fresh rolls and a bag of steamable veggies to round out the meal. I also included a dozen pumpkin muffins to snack on. If you really want to be a good friend, throw in some disposable plates and silverware so they won’t need to do any dishes.
Here are some general rules to follow when bringing over a meal for new parents:
-Use disposable containers – tin foil pans or ziplock containers work great. The last thing you want is the new mom to worry about cleaning and returning your precious casserole dish. I really like these Hefty EZ ovenwear pans, because they can be used in the oven or the microwave.
-Don’t bring anything that needs to be eaten within 24 hours – they may already have a meal planned for that night.
-Check ahead time for allergies – especially with breastfeeding moms, as sometimes they need to cut out dairy or soy for the sake of their little one.
-Don’t forget about snacks/breakfast items – new parents need to eat more than just dinner, so I like to include breakfast items or snacks to go along with dinner. Items that can easily be eaten with one hand while feeding and holding a newborn – granola bars, muffins, scones, etc, are perfect.
I’ve compiled a list of recipes that would work well to take to new parents. The key is you want something that re-heats well, in case they don’t eat it right away. Don’t have time to cook? I’m sure a take-out pizza or a gift card to get take-out would be just as appreciated.
