Crispy oven baked french fries? Seems like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? For years, I’ve attempted to make french fries in the oven, but they always turned out limp and mushy. Now, you can achieve crispy baked fries at home without cooking them in a vat of oil. The key is to bake the fries on a baking rack, allowing air to circulate underneath the fries, crisping and browning them on both sides. Lightly seasoned and served with a side of ketchup, these are perfect to go alongside your burgers and hot dogs this summer.
- 2 russet potatoes
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- 1½ tsp freshly ground pepper
- 1½ tsp garlic salt
- ¾ tsp kosher salt
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- Preheat oven to 450F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with paper towels. Place a cooling rack on top of paper towels.
- Cut potato in even strips and set aside. In a shallow dish, combine the oil and seasoning. Add the potato pieces and toss to coat. Keep remaining oil/seasoning.
- Spread fries onto cooling rack on baking sheet. Cook for 25-35 minutes until done. Every 10 minutes, turn fries to ensure even baking and brush more seasoning/oil onto the fries.
